UNID – União Nacional dos Indiodescendentes (National Union of the Native-American Descendents) is a civil association of a sociocultural disposition, without profitable aim, secular, private, founded on November 27th, 2002. It has as a social goal to gather people considered native American descendants, to organize them socially, study, discuss, disclose and defend the culture of the native-American people, as well as support their claims.
In the last eight years, UNID has been in many debates about the the native-American history, culture, identity and ethnicity. It has promoted or participated of seminars, movie projections, meetings and conferences. This entity was part of the group of work instituted by the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA – Universidade Federal da Bahia) in 2003, which had the mission of purposing a social inclusion policy which resulted in the quotes system adoption in the entrance exams of 2005, with differentiated access to native-Americans, their descendants and African-Americans. Because of the affirmative actions of UNID, the Municipal Chamber of the city of Salvador, the Public Ministry of the State and the press have adopted the expression “indiodescendente”, which means “native American descendant”
PCI - Project Indigenous Face The PCI is a study and investigation proposal about indigenous identity and native American ancestry in Salvador and metropolitan area. The National Union of Native American Descendants (UNID União Nacional do Indiodescendentes), founded in 2002, was the first entity to reunite people interested in the systemized discussion about this topic, as well as the first to produce studies and a database on this sociocultural field.
Debates, meetings and thoughts determined the realization of new studies and investigations about this theme. We have done interviews, collected testimonials, life stories, as well as bibliographic research and we have also consulted specialists in correlated fields (history, literature, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, politics etc). We have reconstructed many sets and elaborated some hypothesis to be tested.
In summary, the PCI is a group of subprojects (cadastral database, field research, documentary film script, life stories collection, home page etc), the biggest part still to be done. And some of these subprojects were realized with the resources of one of the founders of the National Union of Native American Descendants.
Native American Ancestry - Basing the concept
The goal of this material is to present some considerations about the concept of "Native American Ancestry" and about the characterization of the Native American Descendants, in order to support studies about the inclusion of this new ethnic group in the Politics of Affirmative Actions which are being implemented in Brazil. This document already incorporates the more recent critics made by Native Americans and the professionals who work for the rights of the Native American, although this document doesn't quote these critics explicitly.
Who are the indigenous people? How do they live? What is the indigenous culture? What is indigenous ethnicity? What features define the right to have an ethnicity or an ethnic profile? What is identity and ethnic identity? What is to be an indigenous descendant? Who are they? Is it an ethnicity or an identity? What is a self-definition, in law and fact?
As we can see, there are many questions and concepts that we formulate in the fields: socio-anthropologic, philosophic, poetic, etc. However, there are apparently simpler questions that not always find adequate answers, because people can not express them or keep silent, or give nonsense answers. The two questions that will not go away are:
- How to define the Brazilian people? - How the Brazilian people define themselves?
